LYMPHEDEMA

Swelling of an extremity or other body part secondary to a malformation or obstruction of lymphatic channels.


Classification
Primary
  • Hereditary
  • Congenital
  • Lymphedema praecox
  • Lymphedema tarda
Secondary
Obstruction to lymph flow ny infections, filrial adenitis, tumours or surgical adhesions can lead to lymphedema.

Management
  • Mobilization of fluid- massage effleurage
  • Extremity compression-graded pressure pumps
  • Gradient elastic stockings
  • Exercises; to strengthen muscles and improve joint range in order to increase the effectiveness of the muscle pump.
  • In recent times, mechanised sequential compression from distal to proximal segments is done.
